Epidemic Sound_ onboarding
Background
On the Epidemic Sound app, users search for music and sound effects they would use on their content.
For example, users can:
click through Discover pages,
use their own words in the search bar, or
use SoundMatch, an AI tool that suggests tracks that match a user’s video.
Challenge
Most users have one way of searching for a track, and only stick to that method.
However, when it takes too long they find themselves frustrated sometimes.
They are also often not aware of more powerful search tools available.
Approach
Onboarding users and guiding them through the different search methods could lead to happier users who keep their subscription for longer.
Together with Product Managers, Product Designers and engineers, I mapped out the different ways users could search for the perfect track through an onboarding flow. I also made decisions on tone and structure of information.
We also had other existing feature highlights and popups that competed for attention. I either moved them away or combined the information.
Cross collaboration
The feature highlight tooltip is a new design component to be built, so I worked with the design system team to set writing guidelines for it.
When we came across the need for progressive modals, I worked with the Localisation team and accessibility experts in the domain to understand limitations of using different methods of expressing progression.
The screens below show the different considerations we had.
How should we tell users the number of steps to expect? Numerics (“2/5”), spelt out (“2 of 5”)… or use dots like other components?

Next steps
Past research also show that different segments of users have specific search patterns. But to move fast and learn fast, we designed this first iteration for a broad spectrum of users.
The next step that the team wants to explore is to tailor and personalize the onboarding flow to different segments of users based on the search patterns and project needs.
